What part of the chicken is the tender? While this question has confounded the masses for decades, on Saturday night, one thing became clear: a Chicken Tender alternate identity provides the perfect inspiration for one tasty no-hitter. Fueled by protein and an outstanding outing by Rafael Sanchez at Delta Dental Stadium, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats coasted to a seven-inning no-hitter, their fourth in franchise history and first since 2012.

The inspiration behind this savory alternate identity for the Blue Jays’ Double-A affiliate dates back to 1974, when a local establishment called the Puritan Backroom Restaurant invented the chicken tender. And while the fried fare has flown the coop so to speak, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats saw a golden opportunity to honor its Manchester beginnings with some chicken tender-inspired threads.

On Saturday, the Fisher Cats upped the ante, taking the field as the Buffalo Tenders, a spicier offshoot of their prodigal poultry. In the second inning, Alex Stone turned up the heat on the visiting Altoona Curve, crushing his first home run of the season to give New Hampshire a 3-0 lead.

Sanchez peppered two walks into an otherwise dominant start. He struck out only two in his seven innings of work, allowing his tangy band of fellow tenders to help the club cluck its way into history.
