BALTIMORE -- The Astros placed Taylor Trammell on the 10-day injured list with a cervical muscle strain on Thursday after he crashed into the wall in the first inning of Wednesday’s 7-2 loss to the Tigers at Comerica Park and was carted from the field.
Trammell is also in MLB’s concussion protocol, Astros manager Joe Espada said prior to Thursday’s game against the Orioles.
“He’s pretty sore in the back and neck area,” Espada said. “It’s going to take a few days for him to recover and be able to get back on the field."
Trammell awkwardly slammed into the center field wall while unsuccessfully trying to catch a fly ball off the bat of Tigers designated hitter Dillon Dingler. He fell to his knees just as he hit the wall and had a hard time getting to his feet. Trammell appeared to be in immense pain when he initially tried to walk off the field. A cart was eventually summoned to the field.
Rookie Jacob Melton took Trammell’s spot in center field.
Trammell’s availability for Wednesday’s game was in question after he fell flat on his back in the ninth inning of Tuesday’s loss while catching a ball in foul territory in left field. Trammell was able to stay in the game.
The injury to Trammell was part of a disastrous first inning for the Astros. Starting pitcher Framber Valdez needed 29 pitches to record an out and gave up six runs on four hits, three walks and two wild pitches in the frame.
