BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today reinstated right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito from the 15-Day Injured List. Additionally, the club placed left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino on the Bereavement List.
Giolito, 30, will start tonight’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, his first Major League game since October 1, 2023, with the Cleveland Guardians. The right-hander began the season on the Injured List with a left hamstring strain and made five rehab starts with Triple-A Worcester (three starts) and Double-A Portland (two starts), pitching 17.1 innings and allowing 10 runs with 17 strikeouts. Signed by Boston as a free agent on January 3, 2024, the California native missed the entire 2024 season recovering from a right elbow ulnar collateral ligament repair with internal brace performed on March 12, 2024. A 2019 American League All-Star, he owns a 4.43 ERA (499 ER/1,013.2 IP) in 180 career Major League games (178 starts) with the Washington Nationals (2016), Chicago White Sox (2017-23), Los Angles Angels (2023), and Cleveland (2023). He was originally selected by the Nationals in the first round (No. 16 overall) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.
Bernardino, 33, owns a 2.45 ERA (3 ER/11.0 IP) in 11 games for Boston this season, most recently tossing a scoreless, hitless ninth inning with two strikeouts last night against Toronto. Originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 26th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has posted a 3.52 ERA (45 ER/115.0 IP) in 125 career Major League games (nine starts) with the Seattle Mariners (2022) and Red Sox (2023-25).
