Lewis, Valdez receive Reds Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month Nods for July
Shortstop Tyson Lewis (ACL Reds & Single-A Daytona) and left-handed reliever Joel Valdez (Double-A Chattanooga) picked up the Reds' Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month recognition for their respective positional efforts in the month of July.
Lewis, a second round selection in 2024, began his 2025 campaign with the Rookie-ACL Reds before making the jump to the Single-A Daytona Tortugas in late July. Between the two clubs, the 19-year-old slashed .308/.388/.505 with two home runs, 10 doubles, 20 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 22 games.
Valdez, whose contract was purchased by the Reds during the Rule 5 draft in 2024, went the entire month without conceding a run. Over six appearances and 12.1 innings pitched for Chattanooga, not one batter crossed home plate. The Lookouts' southpaw has collected a 1-1 record in 22 appearances with an ERA of 1.63.
Minor League Roundup
Triple-A Louisville
The Louisville Bats have collected 20 runs between their two games against the Gwinnett Stripers, sitting at a perfect 2-0 in the series. The first game, a close 6-4 win, had Rece Hinds and Sal Stewart go yard and help put the Bats up 5-0. In the bottom of the fourth, the Stripers made a run at a comeback by scoring four unanswered runs to make it 5-4. It was Héctor Rodríguez's sixth inning force out that added the insurance run to put the game on ice for Louisville. Game two's triumph featured a lopsided run total from the Bats, as they won 14-2. Through the first five innings, Louisville shelled Gwinnett for a 13-0 lead. Stewart's power bat again showed up, with him picking up five RBIs, three of which came off of his fifth inning home run. Adam Plutko's start on the mound saw the righty strike out five batters through five innings with no hits or earned runs.
Single-A Daytona
Despite an early deficit in game one against the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, the Daytona Tortugas captured the momentum by taking both games of the series. A three-run shot in the first inning quickly put Daytona down 3-0. It wasn't until the fifth frame where the Tortugas got a measure of revenge, with Bernard Moon sending one out of the park. From there, Fort Myers deepened their lead, adding three more runs to hold a 6-1 lead. Drew Davies' double, followed by Alfredo Duno's single and Alfredo Alcantara's late double flipped the game and had the Tortugas lead 7-6 in the eighth. Daytona held on in the last inning to earn itself a comeback victory. There was no need for a Daytona comeback in game two, as a 15-4 win had the Tortugas' offense working early and often. Back-to-back homers from Tyson Lewis and Moon in the first inning started the team off with a 3-0 lead. The lead slowly climbed throughout the contest, with the Mighty Mussels' offense chiming in here and there. Daytona's sixth inning had them take an 8-3 lead and turn it into a 15-3 advantage, with Duno's homer scoring the last three runs for the Tortugas.
