Swinging bunt turns into Little League grand slam for Volts

July 21st, 2025

It started out innocently enough.

With the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, the Volts' Danieca Coffey swung at a two-strike offering and hit a slow tapper back to Bandits pitcher Emiley Kennedy. What could have been an easy out at first instead ended up being one of the most chaotic plays of the AUSL season.

Kennedy's backhand toss got past the first baseman, which opened the floodgates for four Volts runs to come home to score. As the third runner crossed the plate, the throw from Bandits right fielder Bella Dayton sailed over the catcher, allowing Coffey to sprint home too. In the blink of an eye, a 2-1 Bandits lead turned into the Volts taking a 5-2 lead, all on a batted ball that rolled mere feet in front of home plate.

Despite a strong comeback attempt from the Bandits, the Volts held on for a 7-5 win, moving their season record to 7-15. While the Volts ultimately will not play in the AUSL championship -- the Bandits and Talons will play in a best-of-three set from July 26-28 in Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. -- they've had plenty of memorable moments in the league's inaugural season. Coffey's chaotic swinging bunt that turned into a Little League grand slam certainly stands among them.
