NEW YORK -- Mets catcher Luis Torrens left Sunday’s win over the Cubs in the top of the sixth inning after getting hit in the groin on a foul tip off the bat of Chicago outfielder Kyle Tucker.
Torrens was on the ground for several minutes while the team trainer and manager Carlos Mendoza came to his aid. Mendoza then decided to replace Torrens with catcher Francisco Alvarez.
After the game, Mendoza said Torrens was feeling better.
"I’m glad he was able to walk to the dugout," said Mendoza. "He is in a better spot right now.”
Torrens was 1-for-2 with an RBI triple in the series finale. Mendoza said that he is impressed with Torrens' ability to stay ready when called upon. Through Sunday, Torrens has a slash line of .247/.313/.425 in 26 games. Torrens is not your typical backup catcher who plays once a week, however. as he usually suits up at least two or three times a week.
"This is not new territory for Louie,” Mendoza said. “It’s good to see him … contribute to the team, not only defensively, but he gets us going with that triple. … He is a good player. That is another good problem to have. You feel really good about your chances depending on the lineup.”
