Cortes (left biceps tendinitis) placed on IL; Marinaccio recalled from Triple-A

DENVER -- Padres left-hander Nestor Cortes has been placed on the 15-day injured list with left biceps tendinitis (retroactive to Sept. 4), manager Mike Shildt said prior to San Diego’s series opener in Colorado on Friday night.

In a corresponding move, the club recalled right-hander Ron Marinaccio from Triple-A El Paso.

“He’s been a little ouchy all year,” Shildt said of Cortes. “[This time] it was more than normal.”

Cortes was hit hard for six runs on seven hits over 2 1/3 innings against the Orioles in Wednesday’s 7-5 loss at Petco Park. That included back-to-back-to-back home runs by Baltimore’s Colton Cowser, Colby Mayo and Alex Jackson in the third inning.

It was the second time this season that Cortes surrendered three consecutive homers -- he also did so in his season debut with the Brewers on March 29 against the Yankees, when Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge each went deep against him at Yankee Stadium.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Cortes became the second pitcher since at least 1900 to give up back-to-back-to-back homers twice in the same season (also the Dodgers’ Don Newcombe in 1957).

“We’ve got to try and get deeper into games, especially me,” Cortes said after Wednesday’s loss. “Two innings, three innings ain’t going to cut it in this league. Just got to be better.”

In response to the home crowd booing when he walked off the mound in the third inning Wednesday, Cortes said “I would have booed myself, too, watching this game.”

Cortes isn’t the only Padres starter who has been struggling. Over the past nine games, San Diego starters have collectively pitched to a 7.52 ERA and averaged fewer than 3 2/3 innings per start.

The Cortes injury is the latest in a long line of Padres injuries this season, but San Diego does look forward to having right-hander Michael King -- currently on the injured list with left knee inflammation -- back soon, perhaps within days.
