Kopech, Treinen to 60-day IL as Dodgers claim Feyereisen, acquire Loutos

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers claimed right-hander J.P. Feyereisen off waivers from the D-backs and acquired right-hander Ryan Loutos from the Cardinals in exchange for cash considerations on Thursday. Notably, right-handers Michael Kopech and Blake Treinen were transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to add the newcomers to the 40-man roster.
Given where Kopech is in his buildup after opening the season on the IL with right shoulder impingement, his move seems more procedural than anything else. But for Treinen, the shift to the 60-day is an acknowledgement of what had seemed likely from when he was first sidelined with a right forearm sprain: he will miss months, not weeks.
The additions of Feyereisen and Loutos shore up the Dodgers' options for a bullpen that leads the Majors with 136 innings pitched. The team is heading into a stretch of 19 games in the next 20 days, including 10 in a row on the upcoming three-city road trip through Atlanta, Miami and Phoenix.
TRADE DETAILS
Dodgers get: RHP Ryan Loutos
Cardinals get: Cash considerations
The most recent word on Kopech, who posted a 1.13 ERA with six saves after being acquired by the Dodgers ahead of last year's Trade Deadline, was that he was doing well in his bullpen progression and could begin facing live hitters around the end of this week. After a number of live sessions, the 29-year-old righty will need to go on a rehab assignment, because he has not seen any game action this season.

As a point of comparison, Evan Phillips -- who also opened the year on the 15-day IL -- completed six Minor League rehab outings before being activated. He had been set for a seventh, but was pressed into Major League duty sooner than expected because of Treinen's injury.
Treinen remains shut down from throwing since going on the 15-day IL on April 19. Imaging on his forearm revealed a low-grade sprain, and there was no planned medical intervention beyond resting and rehabbing. The 36-year-old righty posted a 3.38 ERA with two saves across his first eight outings, and he won't be eligible to be activated from the IL until mid-June. There is no timeline for his return.
Feyereisen, 32, also had a stint in the Dodgers' organization last year. He appeared in two games with the D-backs this season, allowing three runs (two earned) in two innings.

Loutos, 26, was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Monday. He made his Major League debut and didn't allow a run in three outings in 2024, and he had a 3.38 ERA across eight appearances with Triple-A Memphis this year.
