NEW YORK -- Chris Sale took a step toward rejoining Atlanta’s rotation when he began a Minor League rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday night.

Sale threw 40 pitches while limiting Louisville to one run over two innings while striking out two. This was the 2024 National League Cy Young Award winner’s first time pitching in a game since he fractured his left rib while diving for a grounder against the Mets on June 18.

Braves manager Brian Snitker said Sale won’t be activated before he throws 75-plus pitches in a rehab game. This sets up the possibility for two more rehab starts.

Sale pitched around a single and a walk in the first inning. The 36-year-old lefty surrendered consecutive singles to begin the second, but limited the damage to one run despite issuing his second walk of the night.
