Blalock starts in SF after Feltner lands on IL

SAN FRANCISCO -- Rockies right-hander likely will miss at least two starts after being placed on the 15-day injured list Friday due to lingering back spasms.

The 28-year-old was scheduled to start on Saturday at Oracle Park. Instead, the Rockies called up right-hander Bradley Blalock from Triple-A Albuquerque to face the Giants.

Colorado’s hope is that the time off will help Feltner’s back heal.

“We just wanted to make sure that he didn’t make this start on Saturday compromised,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “The way his back felt, it would have. The back was just not in a position where Ryan felt comfortable giving it a go, and we didn’t feel comfortable.”

Winless in six starts with a 4.75 ERA this season, Feltner has been dealing with the injury for a while. His previous start was pushed back a day because of the back pain.

Black said Feltner will continue to rehab at the club’s facilities in Colorado.

Feltner flew to Denver on Friday and went through a light workout. He’s expected to follow the same routine Saturday and Monday. If all goes well, Feltner will start throwing bullpen sessions next week.

“It’s getting better each day,” Black said. “So that’s a good sign.”

Acquired in a trade from the Brewers last July, Blalock (0-1, 10.29 ERA) has pitched in three games with the Rockies this season. After two outings in relief, Blalock made his first start of the season Sunday vs. the Reds and allowed six runs in four-plus innings.

“He’s rested, ready to go,” Black said. “Looks like he could make two starts. We’ll see.”
