Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following transactions prior to Sunday’s series finale against St. Louis at Globe Life Field:
- RHP Nathan Eovaldi placed on 15-day Injured List, retroactive to May 29.
- RHP Codi Heuer (#54, pronounced ‘KOH-dee HOY-er’) contract selected from Triple-A Round Rock.
- C Tucker Barnhart designated for assignment.
The 35-year-old Eovaldi was removed from his last start on Tuesday vs. Toronto after throwing 2.0 scoreless innings and is on the Injured List with right posterior elbow inflammation. In 12 starts for Texas this season, the right-hander has gone 4-3 with a 1.56 ERA (12 ER/69.1 IP), 73 strikeouts, 10 walks, a 0.81 WHIP, and a .185 (46-249) opponent batting average. His 1.56 ERA ranks 2nd among qualified MLB pitchers this year, behind Kansas City’s Kris Bubic (1.45).
Heuer, 28, has spent the 2025 season with Round Rock (AAA), going 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA (8 ER/22.0 IP), 25 strikeouts, 11 walks, a 1.32 WHIP, and a .222 (18-81) opponent batting average in 19 relief appearances for the Express. The right-hander has worked 1.1+ innings in four consecutive outings since May 18 and sports a 2.89 ERA (3 ER/9.1 IP) in his last 7 games since May 10. His most recent appearance came on Tuesday vs. Reno, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings with 2 strikeouts to earn his 2nd win of the year.
Originally selected by Chicago-AL in the 6th round of the 2018 MLB Draft from Wichita State University, Heuer made his MLB debut with the White Sox in 2020 and has compiled a 10-4 record with a 3.56 ERA (36 ER/91.0 IP) in 86 career games (all relief) with the White Sox (2020-21) and Cubs (2021). The Missoula, Mont. native is seeking his first Major League appearance since 9/29/21 at Pittsburgh with Chicago-NL, as season-ending elbow surgeries in 2022 (‘Tommy John’ ligament replacement surgery) and 2023 (fractured right elbow) have limited Heuer to 34 minor league appearances since 2022. After electing free agency following the 2023 season, Heuer signed a minor league contract with Texas on 4/4/24 but did not see game action last year as he continued his rehabilitation from surgery. He re-signed with the club to a minor league contract with a Major League Spring Training invitation on 12/19/24 and made his organizational debut in four Cactus League relief outings during the Rangers’ 2025 spring campaign.
Barnhart, 34, batted .231 (3-13) with one walk in 8 games for Texas this season since having his contract selected from Triple-A Round Rock on April 30. He appeared defensively at catcher (7 games/3 starts) and pitcher (one game), including his 7th career mound appearance on May 2 vs. Seattle (2.0 IP, 3 ER). The Rangers have seven days to trade, release, or outright Barnhart to the minor leagues.
With today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with three players (Cody Bradford, Jon Gray, Josh Sborz) on the 60-day Injured List. The club will play with 25 active players today vs. St. Louis.
