RED SOX ANNOUNCE ROSTER MOVES

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Reinstated right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts from the 15-Day Injured List.
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly to Triple-A Worcester, following yesterday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
  • Reinstated left-handed pitcher Zach Penrod from the 60-Day Injured List and optioned him to Worcester.

Fitts, 25, will start tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers. The right-hander made one rehab start with Double-A Portland, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings. He is 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA (6 ER/17.0 IP) in three starts for Boston this season. Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the sixth round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, the Alabama native owns a 2.39 ERA (10 ER/37.2 IP) with 22 strikeouts in seven career Major League games, all starts for the Red Sox (2024-25).

Kelly, 30, has made eight appearances for Boston this season, posting an 8.25 ERA (11 ER/12.0 IP) with 11 strikeouts. The right-hander has also recorded a 9.28 ERA (11 ER/10.2 IP) in nine games (one start) for Worcester. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Oakland Athletics in 2017, the Virginia native owns a 4.52 ERA (46 ER/91.2 IP) with 89 strikeouts in 78 career games (three starts), all with Boston (2022-25).

Penrod, 27, made his MLB debut for Boston last season, posting a 2.25 ERA (1 ER/4.0 IP) in seven games. The left-hander began the season on the 60-Day Injured List with a left elbow sprain. He made one rehab appearance with the FCL Red Sox, tossing a scoreless first inning on May 24. Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in August 2023, the Idaho native has also recorded a 3.67 ERA (34 ER/83.1 IP) with 113 SO in 26 minor league games (16 starts) over his last two seasons (2023-24), between High-A Greenville (four starts), Double-A Portland (seven starts), and Worcester (15 games, five starts).
