Rangers Activate SS Corey Seager From 10-Day Injured List, Option INF Jonathan Ornelas To Triple-A Round Rock

RHP Dane Dunning assigned outright to Triple-A Round Rock

May 3rd, 2025

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following transactions prior to Saturday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners at Globe Life Field:

  • Shortstop Corey Seager activated from the 10-day Injured List (right hamstring strain).
  • Infielder Jonathan Ornelas optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.
  • Right-handed pitcher Dane Dunning assigned outright to Triple-A Round Rock.

Seager, 31, spent the minimum 10 days on the Injured List after straining his right hamstring while running to first base in the 6th inning on April 22 at the Athletics. The left-handed-hitting shortstop took live batting practice at Globe Life Field on both Thursday and Friday, and did not make a minor league rehab appearance.

In 21 games with Texas in 2025, Seager has hit .286/.345/.468/.813 (22-77) with 4 home runs, 2 doubles, 6 RBI, 7 walks, 15 strikeouts, and 8 runs scored, making 20 starts at shortstop and one at designated hitter. He reached safely via hit or walk in 11 of his last 12 games from April 8-22 preceding the injury, sporting a .370 (17-46) average during that span with 3 home runs and 5 RBI. On the year, Seager leads Texas position players with 1.4 bWAR (baseball-reference), and the club is 12-8 (.600) in his 20 starts at shortstop this season.

Seager has slashed .281/.350/.522/.872 (455-1622) with 100 home runs, one triple, 89 doubles, and 259 RBI in 4 seasons with the Rangers (beg. 2022) since signing a 10-year free agent contract with the club on 12/1/21. The 11-year MLB veteran and 5-time All-Star (2016-17 with LAD, 2022-24 with TEX) has accrued 22.7 bWAR since the start of 2020, 2nd most among primary shortstops in that span behind NYM’s Francisco Lindor (23.5).

Ornelas, 24, has logged two stints with Texas this season (March 30-April 8, May 2), going 0-for-5 with one walk and 3 strikeouts over 4 games/one start (3 G/1 GS at SS, 1 G at 2B). He was recalled from Round Rock prior to yesterday’s game vs. Seattle, entering defensively at second base in the 7th inning and grounding out in his only plate appearance. The right-handed-hitting infielder, who has seen Major League action in three consecutive seasons with the Rangers (2023-25), owns a career .184 (9-49) batting average with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in 30 MLB games/14 starts.

Dunning, 30, was designated for assignment by Texas on Wednesday, one day after making his 2025 Rangers debut on Tuesday vs. the Athletics (SV, 3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R-ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 52 pitches/31 strikes). He is expected to report to Round Rock in the coming days. In 125 career MLB games/102 starts with Chicago-AL (2020) and Texas (2021-25), the right-hander has gone 28-32 with one save and a 4.36 ERA (279 ER/575.2 IP).

With today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with three players (Cody Bradford, Jon Gray, Josh Sborz) on the 60-day Injured List.
