Ceddanne Rafaela of the Red Sox Claims Play of the Week with Incredible Home Run Robbery

September 8th, 2025

Right fielder Jo Adell of the Los Angeles Angels has been named the American League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet, and All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman of the Colorado Rockies has been named the National League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Adell earned his first career award and is the third Angel to win the award this season, joining teammates Taylor Ward (May 27th) and Zach Neto (August 18th). It is the first time the Angels have earned at least three recognitions in the same season since 2023 (Shohei Ohtani 3x and Luis Rengifo) and the first time three separate Halos have earned the honor in the same season since 2021 (Shohei Ohtani 2x, Max Stassi and David Fletcher). Goodman also won his first career award and is the second member of Colorado to be recognized this year, joining teammate Warming Bernabel on August 4th. It is the first time the Rockies have garnered multiple honors in the same season since C.J. Cron and Nolan Jones were both honored in 2023.

Jo Adell, Los Angeles Angels (@adell7)

  • The 26-year-old hit .407 (11-for-27) with five homers, 12 RBI, a double, two walks, six runs scored, a stolen base, a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .448 on-base percentage across seven games.
  • The Shelby, North Carolina native led the Majors in homers, RBI and total bases (27); tied for first in slugging and extra-base hits (6); tied for fourth in hits (11); and ranked sixth in OPS (1.448).
  • The 10th overall pick of the 2017 Draft homered in each of his first three games to begin the week, marking the second time in his career that he hit a home run in three consecutive games, joining a three-game stretch earlier this year from June 18th-20th. Per Elias, he became the fourth Angel with a go-ahead homer in three consecutive games, joining Mike Trout (June 18-19, 2022); Ian Kinsler (June 6-9, 2018); and Jack Howell (September 30-October 2, 1987).
  • The six-year veteran tallied four RBI on Wednesday at Kansas City, capping off a three-game streak in which he had multiple hits, multiple RBI and a homer in each game. He became the seventh Angel to accomplish the feat in at least three straight games and the first since Mark Trumbo also did so in three consecutive games in August 2013.
  • Adell capped off his week with home runs in back-to-back contests on Saturday and Sunday against the Athletics, as his 12 RBI marked the most in a seven-game span of his career. He has hit a career-high 35 home runs, surpassing his previous mark of 20 set last year, while also setting career bests this season in nearly every category, including hits (114), RBI (94), runs (57) and OPS (.811).

  • The first-time All-Star in 2025 racked up three hits in three consecutive games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, going 9-for-12 with two homers, two doubles and nine RBI. He became the second player in franchise history with at least three hits and multiple RBI in three consecutive games, joining Dante Bichette (July 3-6, 1995).
  • The fourth-round selection in the 2021 Draft became the first member of the Rockies with three hits-or-more in at least three consecutive games since Raimel Tapia in June 2021. Additionally, he became Colorado’s first player with at least nine RBI in a three-game span since Ryan McMahon registered 10 RBI in a three-game stretch in May 2023.
  • Goodman closed his week with homers in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday against San Diego, marking the fifth time this season that he homered in consecutive games. Along with his home run on Tuesday, he has hit a longball in each of his last three games as a catcher, marking the first time a Rockies player homered in three consecutive games as a catcher since Elias Díaz in July/August 2021. He is the first Rockies catcher under the age of 25 to accomplish the feat since Tom Murphy in September 2015. Overall, of Goodman’s career-high 29 homers this season, 26 have come as a catcher, marking the second-most as a catcher in Rockies’ history, trailing only Wilin Rosario’s 2012 mark of 27 home runs.

Incredible Home Run Robbery by Ceddanne Rafaela of the Boston Red Sox

September 6th at Chase Field – Watch It Here

Boston Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela earned his second career Play of the Week Award after previously winning earlier this season on May 12th. It is the fourth honor for Boston since the inception of the award in 2019, joining awards for Jackie Bradley Jr. on May 14, 2019 and J.D. Martinez on July 6, 2021. With one out and the Arizona Diamondbacks leading the Red Sox, 4-1, in the fifth inning, Corbin Carroll hit a ball to the right-center alley that would have been a home run if not for Rafaela’s acrobatic leap to bring the ball back. Additional Play of the Week candidates included Will Robertson’s home run robbery; Max Fried’s sliding catch and quick throw to first for a double play; Dansby Swanson and Justin Turner’s all-out effort for the out; Blaze Alexander’s home run robbery; Bobby Witt Jr.’s diving stop and strong throw to first; and Elly De La Cruz’s unassisted double play.
