The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired infielder Cam Devanney (pronounced duh-VAY-nee) from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for infielder/outfielder Adam Frazier.
The 28-year-old Devanney has played all of his 69 games this season with Triple-A Omaha, where he hit .272 (67-for-246) with 14 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs, 55 RBI, a .366 OBP, a .565 slugging percentage and a .931 OPS. Devanney had his contract selected prior to Kansas City’s game on July 8 vs. Pittsburgh, but he has yet to make his Major League debut.
Devanney came into today ranked first among all Royals full-season minor leaguers in home runs, slugging, OPS and extra-base hits (34), second in total bases (139) and sixth in batting. He was also tied for fifth in the International League in home runs, fifth in slugging and sixth in OPS.
During the 2024 campaign at Omaha, Devanney appeared in 123 games (122 starts) at shortstop, posting a .968 fielding percentage (14 errors in 1060.1 innings). Devanney’s 1060.1 innings at shortstop were tied for the fifth-most innings of any minor league player at a single position in 2024. He was one of six players in all of MiLB to play at least 1000.0 innings at shortstop, while his .968 fielding percentage at shortstop ranked third in MiLB behind the Dodgers’ Noah Miller and the Blue Jays’ Josh Kasevich.
Devanney, who has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, was originally selected by Milwaukee in the 15th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft. He was then acquired by Kansas City on December 14, 2023, along with pitcher Ryan Brady, in exchange for pitcher Taylor Clarke.
The Pirates will make a corresponding move on the 26-man active roster tomorrow.
