Mariners Acquire Left-Handed Pitcher Caleb Ferguson From Pittsburgh

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today the Mariners have acquired left-handed pitcher Caleb Ferguson from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Jeter Martinez. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Collin Snider has been reinstated from the 15-day Injured List and designated for assignment.

“We are excited to add Caleb and fortify our bullpen down the stretch,” said Hollander. “He’s been one of the most reliable left-handed relievers in the game and adds postseason experience to our group.”

Ferguson, 29, has made 45 relief appearances with the Pirates this season, going 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA (18 ER, 43.1 IP) with 14 walks, 34 strikeouts and a 1.08 WHIP.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound left-hander has appeared in parts of 7 Major League seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2018-2023), New York Yankees (2024), Houston Astros (2024) and Pittsburgh Pirates (2025). In 308 career appearances (14 GS), he is 21-15 with a 3.69 ERA (125 ER, 305.0 IP) with 348 strikeouts and 121 walks, holding opponents to a .236 average.

Ferguson has appeared in 3 postseasons, the NLDS and NLCS in 2018 with the Dodgers, NLDS in 2023 with the Dodgers and the AL Wildcard Series in 2024 with the Astros. In 9 total postseason relief appearances, he owns a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 5.2 IP), holding opponents hitless with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Ferguson is one of only 4 relievers in MLB history to not allow a hit in 5.0+ career innings pitched in the postseason along with Trevor Stephan-CLE, Brad Boxberger-2Tms and Carlos Villanueva-2Tms.

He was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 38th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft from West Jefferson High School (West Jefferson, OH) and made his Major League Debut on June 6, 2018. Ferguson signed with the Pirates as a free agent in 2025.

Martinez, 19, has made 16 starts with the Class-A Modesto Nuts this season, going 2-6 with a 6.18 ERA (43 ER, 62.2 IP) with 60 strikeouts and 38 walks.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound right-hander was ranked as the #13 overall prospect and #4 pitching prospect in the organization via MLB Pipeline.

In 39 career minor league appearances between the Dominican Summer League (2023), Arizona Complex League (2024) and Modesto (2025), Martinez is 4-12 with a 4.16 ERA (69 ER, 149.1 IP) with 164 strikeouts and 89 walks, holding opponents to a .204 batting average. He was signed as a minor league free agent by the Mariners in 2023.

Snider, 29, was placed on the Injured List on June 4. He appeared in 24 games this season with Seattle, going 2-1 with a 5.47 ERA (16 ER, 26.1 IP), 6 walks, 24 strikeouts and a 1.44 WHIP.

The 6-foot-4 right-hander has appeared in parts of 4 Major League seasons with Kansas City (2022-23) and Seattle (2024-c), going 9-7 with 1 save, a 4.48 ERA (61 ER, 122.2 IP), 47 walks and 104 strikeouts in 128 games (1 start). He was originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 12th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Vanderbilt University (TN). He was claimed off waivers by the Mariners from the Arizona Diamondbacks on February 6, 2024.
