ANAHEIM – The Angels selected RHP Tyler Bremner from University of California, Santa Barbara as their first pick (1st round, 2nd overall) in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Angels Director, Amateur Scouting Tim McIlvaine.
Bremner, 21, went 5-4 with a 3.49 ERA (77.1 IP – 30 ER) and 111 strikeouts across 14 starts in his junior season with UC Santa Barbara in 2025. He led the Big West Conference in strikeouts, and ranked fifth in the nation (min. 70 IP) averaging 12.92 strikeouts per nine innings. Bremner also led the Big West (min. 70 IP) in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.84), ranked second in WHIP (1.02) and was fourth in earned run average. He was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week twice (May 12 and May 19), and struck out at least 10 batters in six of his last seven starts.
For his efforts, Bremner was named to the All-Big West First Team and ABCA/Rawlings All-West Region First Team, and was named a Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist. Bremner was also selected to the Perfect Game All-America Second Team. He finished his collegiate career with a 21-9 record and 3.58 ERA (221.1 IP – 88 ER) in 50 games (31 starts) across three seasons for UCSB, and leaves as the program’s all-time leader with 295 strikeouts.
As the second overall selection, Bremner is the Angels highest draft pick since Darin Erstad (first overall) in the 1995 Draft. This is the first time in franchise history that the Angels have held the second overall pick.
After selecting 2B Christian Moore (8th overall) last year, 1B Nolan Schanuel (11th overall) in 2023 and SS Zach Neto (13th overall) in 2022, the Angels have drafted a pitcher with their initial first round pick for the first time since taking Sam Bachman (9th overall) in 2021.
