His parents own and operate a coffee shop in the San Diego suburb of Alpine, Calif...the shop saw an unprecedented amount of business following Joe's historic no-hitter on April 9, 2021 at Texas...Following the no-hitter, he was handsomely rewarded with a lifetime supply of beer from Ballast Point Brewing, and he collaborated with Resident Brewing to create his own beer, the No-No Joe Double IPA...Had a mural painted of him at Grossmont High School in San Diego's East County, where he was a 2011 graduate...he pitched and played first base, going 7-5 with a 2.40 ERA (27 ER, 78.2 IP) and 100 strikeouts in 14 games as a senior...also hit .350 (36-for-103) with nine HR and 32 RBI...was part of the offensive and defensive line on the football team...His first tattoo was an interlocking "S" and "D" set inside a baseball on his left arm with "est. 1992" underneath...his grandmother, Lucy Papitto, was not fond of the decision...Joe reminded her of that in a FaceTime call the day he officially became a member of the Padres and 10 years after he got that ink, he pulled up his sleeve for her and said with a smile, “I told you it would play out.”...His favorite player growing up was Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, and he wears No. 44 in his honor.

Limited to 19 starts due to two separate IL stints, posting quality starts in 10 of his 19 outings with a 6-5 record, 3.88 ERA (43 ER, 99.2 IP) and 101 SO against 23 BB (4.39 SO/ BB ratio)....Across his first eight starts of the season from March 21-May 1 prior to his first IL stint, he posted a 6.37 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, .308 opp. AVG, 7.90 SO/9 IP and 10.76 H/9 IP....Placed on the 15-day IL on May 5
