Padres send King to IL with right shoulder inflammation

May 25th, 2025

ATLANTA -- Padres ace right-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation prior to Sunday's series finale against the Braves.

King had been scheduled to start on Saturday in Atlanta but was scratched less than an hour before first pitch.

On Saturday, Padres manager Mike Shildt said King awoke with shoulder stiffness in the morning and King was placed on the injured list about 24 hours later.

"He’s got something going on with his [scapula] that we’re trying to locate,” Shildt said. “[There’s] just some weakness in that area. That’s a pretty important area for the pitcher. Typically we’re in a day-to-day situation, but we’re still a little bit more in the discovery phase with what this is. It’s not an overly common situation but it’s something that, medically, we’ll have our hands on. We’ll get back to San Diego and we’ll evaluate it over the next couple of days.”

Shildt said King didn’t feel any more discomfort Sunday than he did Saturday.

“He didn’t feel anything more, which is encouraging,” Shildt said. “They think he took a baby step forward. He definitely felt a little better today, but not worse.”

Through 10 starts this season, King picked up right where he left off with his stellar 2024, with a 4-2 record and 2.59 ERA through 55 2/3 innings as one of San Diego's premier rotation arms.

The Padres return to San Diego for a three-game series against the Marlins starting on Monday. As of Sunday evening, San Diego does not have probables announced.

"Ideally Michael misses one start the way the schedule can work out,” Shildt said. “We’ll make a move and have somebody to make a start. We’ll evaluate who and when that is soon. We’ve already evaluated it. We’ll just finalize and announce it. We should have the rotation for Miami here shortly.”

To take King's spot on the 26-man roster, the Padres recalled right-hander David Morgan from Triple-A El Paso.
