Wright State stuns No. 1 overall seed Vanderbilt in NCAA regionals

June 2nd, 2025

In one of the most shocking upsets in college baseball history, Vanderbilt was eliminated in the regional round of the 2025 NCAA Baseball tournament.

With a 5-4 loss on Sunday against Wright State -- the No. 4 seed out of the Horizon League -- the No. 1 national seed Vanderbilt Commodores will not be advancing to the next round. After winning their opening game against Wright State on Friday, the Commodores lost to Louisville on Saturday and then Wright State on Sunday.

The 43-18 Commodores became the first No. 1 national seed to fail to reach their regional final since the tournament switched to its current format in 1999.

One of the most successful college baseball programs in recent history, Vanderbilt entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed after winning the SEC Tournament title. This season marked the 19th consecutive year Vanderbilt has made the NCAA tournament, the longest active streak of any college. Since 2011, the Commodores have five College World Series appearances, including winning it all in 2014 and ‘19.

Vanderbilt has produced plenty of big leaguers, including, but not limited to: David Price, Dansby Swanson, Sonny Gray, Walker Buehler, Bryan Reynolds, Mike Yastzremski, JJ Bleday, Mike Minor, Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker.
