ATLANTA -- Reds rookie Tyler Callihan broke his left forearm during a hard crash into the wall as he tried to catch a fly ball near the foul line in the bottom of the third inning of Monday's game against the Braves.
Atlanta led, 2-0, with two outs when Braves first baseman Matt Olson hit an opposite-field drive near the left-field corner. Callihan ran down and appeared to catch the ball as his momentum sent him two more steps before slamming into the side wall. Replays showed his arm bending in an awkward direction as the ball popped out of his glove.
Fans gasped at the play as center fielder TJ Friedl ran over to retrieve the ball while Reds trainers were already running onto the field as Olson circled the bases for an inside the park home run. The Reds challenged the ruling on the field, but the call was confirmed as no catch and Olson scored on what stood as a two-run home run.
Callihan, who was promoted to the big leagues for the first time from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday, was holding his arm as he was walked off the field. Blake Dunn replaced him in left field.
