Former All-Star Vogt to serve as AL coach: 'Of course I accepted'

SAN FRANCISCO -- Ten years after he earned his first career All-Star nod as a player, Guardians manager is headed back to the Midsummer Classic.

Vogt will serve as an honorary American League coach for the 2025 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard, which is set for July 15 at the Braves’ Truist Park. Yankees skipper Aaron Boone (who is managing the AL by virtue of New York winning the pennant last season) extended Vogt the invite.

Former Yankees manager Joe Torre will also serve as an honorary coach.

“Of course I'm excited,” said Vogt, who was an All-Star in 2015 and ’16 while playing for the A’s. “I get to go watch the best players in the world show off for two days. It's a great event. I'm truly honored that Booney asked me. … He just asked if I'd like to go, and he'd be honored to have me join him, and of course I accepted.

“It's the coolest All-Star Game there is in professional sports. The guys are playing full speed. They're trying to get each other out there, they’re trying to hit homers. They're playing the game the right way. So it'll be a really fun time for my family and me to go to Atlanta.”

Vogt’s wife, Alyssa, his daughter, Payton, and son, Clark, joined him at the 2015 and ’16 All-Star Games. Alyssa was pregnant with their youngest son, Bennett, the last time around, so this will mark the first time the whole family will attend together. Vogt also played 26 games for Atlanta in 2021 (his next-to-last season as a player), adding another unique layer to the event.

Vogt could have a few familiar faces alongside him in the AL dugout, too. José Ramírez is all but assured of earning his seventh career All-Star nod, and Steven Kwan is a strong candidate to earn his second straight.

Ramírez (who entered Tuesday slashing .324/.385/.543 in 68 games this season) led AL third basemen in voting in the first All-Star ballot update, which was released on Monday. Kwan (who entered the day hitting .300 in 67 games this season) ranked fourth in voting among AL outfielders.

Phase 1 of voting runs until noon ET on June 26. The top two vote-getters at each position will advance to the second phase (top six for outfielders). If an outfielder is the overall leading vote-getter, then only the next four outfielders will advance to the second phase.
