The Twins on Monday placed right-hander on the 15-day IL with an illness, retroactive to Aug. 1.

Though the team did not specify the type of illness, manager Rocco Baldelli said Sunday that the pitcher was dealing with a "stomach issue." He had been slated to start Sunday's game against the Guardians, but was initially pushed back to Wednesday before Monday's announcement of his IL stint.

Woods Richardson, 24, has appeared in 17 games this season (16 starts) and is 5-4 with a 4.24 ERA in 80 2/3 innings. The Twins are 10-7 in games in which he's appeared.

In his last start, July 28 against the Red Sox, Woods Richardson allowed three earned runs over 4 2/3 innings, the third straight start in which he pitched fewer than five innings.

In a corresponding move, the Twins selected right-hander Darren McCaughan's contract from Triple-A St. Paul, where he's gone 5-5 with a 5.35 ERA in 72 1/3 innings. He appeared in three games for the Twins in March and April, tossing 5 1/3 innings and allowing one run.
