Frelick exits early with left knee discomfort

MILWAUKEE -- Already missing two of their regular outfielders from last season, the Brewers saw Gold Glove Award-winning right fielder exit Sunday’s series finale against the Cubs with left knee discomfort.

Frelick grabbed at his left leg after an awkward swing in the second inning but was able to stay in the game until the top of the fourth, when Daz Cameron took over in right field. Cameron, in turn, was called up to the big leagues last weekend after starting center fielder Garrett Mitchell landed on the injured list with a strained left oblique.

And on top of that, versatile switch-hitter Blake Perkins, a Gold Glove Award finalist in center last season, has been on the IL from the start of this season after fracturing his right shin during the early days of Spring Training.

With all of those injuries to contend with, an area of depth for the Brewers has been significantly thinned. Isaac Collins and Jake Bauers have seen time in the outfield over the past week, as has Christian Yelich, who mostly served as the designated hitter in March and April as he returns from last year’s back surgery.

Frelick, who flew out to deep right field later in that second-inning at-bat on Sunday, is hitting .297 this season with a .779 OPS.
