Get your Superman memes ready. Rob Refsnyder came to the rescue for the Red Sox on Sunday in Seattle, where he made a "Superman" catch, going into a full-extension dive with his back toward the infield to, ahem, "Rob" the Mariners' Ty France of extra bases in right-center field.
The catch was not only incredible to behold, but it was also critical given the situation. Boston led, 2-0, with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, and if France had gotten himself into scoring position, things could have gone south in a tight game.
But Refsnyder wouldn't allow that, covering 73 feet in 4.4 seconds to make a grab that, according to Statcast, had a catch probability of 20 percent. The Red Sox held on to win, 2-0, to cap off an 8-2 West Coast road trip.
“Off the bat, I really didn’t think I had a chance," Refsnyder said. "It stayed up there. I was thankful to get there. I was pretty pumped up, and Ty is a pretty special hitter right now."
You can put five stars on that play. And you can put a red cape on Refsnyder.
“Amazing catch," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "The jump, and to get to it, was amazing.”
