BOSTON – The runners in scoring position woes continued on for the Red Sox for another nine innings on Wednesday.
But this game went to extras, giving pinch-hitter Nick Sogard the chance to get a walk-off fielder’s choice RBI grounder in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Red Sox pulled off an important 5-4 win over the Athletics.
Sogard hit a sharp grounder to second baseman Zack Gelof, who fired to the plate, but speedy automatic runner Nate Eaton slid in safely for the win.
After Nathaniel Lowe was walked intentionally, Carlos Narváez dropped down a sacrifice bunt to set up runners at second and third with one out.
Down 4-2 after the A’s scored three in the top of the fifth, the Red Sox chipped away.
Masataka Yoshida legged out an infield RBI single in the fifth to slim the deficit to a run. Trevor Story, Boston’s most consistent player for the last several weeks, came through with an equalizing, two-out RBI single up the middle in the sixth.
Lucas Giolito labored in this one, giving up five hits, four runs and five walks over 4 1/3 innings. Giolito also hit the 140-inning mark on the season, turning what was a $14 million club option for ‘26 into a $19 million mutual option that includes a $1.5 million buyout.
