July 31: Red Sox land two pitchers at Deadline
The Red Sox swung a pair of deals to improve their pitching staff and otherwise stood pat at this year's Deadline.

Boston landed left-hander Steven Matz from the Cardinals in exchange for infielder Blaze Jordan, who was the organization’s No. 17 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. Matz has a 3.44 ERA in 32 games (two starts) in his age-34 season, emerging as a valuable cog in the St. Louis bullpen.

Then, in the waning minutes leading up to the Deadline, the Red Sox acquired right-hander Dustin May from the Dodgers for outfield prospects James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard. May has a 4.85 ERA amid a career-high 104 innings in his first year back from flexor tendon and esophageal injuries. For the time being, he offers the Red Sox stability at the back-end of their rotation and is eligible to become a free agent at season’s end.

Notably, the Red Sox did not land any of the premier starting pitchers on the market, making May the lone upgrade. They had reportedly shown interest in Zac Gallen and Dylan Cease -- who were each not traded -- as well as Merrill Kelly, who went to the Rangers. According to MLB Network Insider Jon Morosi, the Red Sox also made a late push on Thursday for Twins All-Star right-hander Joe Ryan, who ultimately remained with Minnesota.

Boston also held onto outfielder Jarren Duran, amid reports from The Athletic’s Jim Bowden that the Red Sox were discussing Duran with the Padres and Phillies, among other teams. Duran, who has a .793 OPS this season, remains integral to the team’s playoff hopes.
