BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today reinstated outfielder Wilyer Abreu from the 10-Day Injured List. To make room on the active roster, Boston designated catcher Ali Sánchez for assignment.
Abreu, 26, was placed on the 10-Day Injured List on August 21 (retroactive to August 18) with a right calf strain. The left-handed hitter has hit .253 (89-for-352) with 22 home runs and 69 RBI in 108 games this season, making 90 starts in right field and one as the designated hitter. Originally signed as an international free agent by the Houston Astros in July 2017, the Venezuela native has hit .259 (214-for-827) with 55 doubles, two triples, 39 home runs, and 141 RBI over 268 career Major League games, all with the Red Sox (2023-25).
Sánchez, 28, has appeared in four games for the Red Sox over two stints, catching 3.1 innings. The right-handed hitter has also played in eight games this season for the Toronto Blue Jays, batting .238 (5-for-21) with two doubles while making five starts as the catcher. Originally signed by the New York Mets as an international free agent on July 2, 2013, the Venezuela native has hit .183 (22-for-120) in 50 career Major League games with the Mets (2020), St. Louis Cardinals (2021), Miami Marlins (2024), Blue Jays (2025), and Red Sox (2025).
