RED SOX ANNOUNCE ROSTER MOVES

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Added catcher Ali Sánchez to the active Major League roster. He will wear number 18.
  • Selected left-handed pitcher Jovani Morán to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester. He will wear number 47.
  • Optioned infielder David Hamilton and left-handed pitcher Chris Murphy to Worcester.
  • Designated right-handed pitcher Nick Burdi for assignment.

Sánchez, 28, was claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. The right-handed hitter has played in eight games this season for the Blue Jays, batting .238 (5-for-21) with two doubles while making five starts as the catcher. He has also played in 54 games with Triple-A Buffalo, batting .279 (50-for-179) with a .766 OPS, seven doubles, six home runs, and 28 RBI. Originally signed by the New York Mets as an international free agent on July 2, 2013, the Venezuela native has played in 46 career Major League games with the Mets (2020), St. Louis Cardinals (2021), Miami Marlins (2024), and Blue Jays (2025).

Morán, 28, was acquired from the Minnesota Twins on December 24, 2024, in exchange for catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper. The left-hander missed the entire 2024 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. This season, he owns a 3.81 ERA (11 ER/26.0 IP) and .232 opponent batting average (23-for-99) with 43 strikeouts in 18 games (five starts) with the FCL Red Sox (2 starts), High-A Greenville (four games, two starts), and Worcester (12 games, one start). Originally selected by the Twins in the seventh round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, the Puerto Rico native has recorded a 4.15 ERA (42 ER/91.0 IP) with 112 strikeouts in 79 career Major League games, all in relief with Minnesota (2021-23).

Hamilton, 27, has played in 69 games this season, making 32 starts at second base and six at shortstop while batting .174 (23-for-132) with 17 stolen bases. The left-handed hitter has also played in four games for Worcester. Originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the eighth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native has hit .218 (100-for-459) with 52 stolen bases in 182 career Major League games, all with Boston (2023-25).

Murphy, 27, has pitched in 14 games this season, going 2-0 with a 3.05 ERA (7 ER/20.2 IP) and .162 opponent batting average (12-for-74). The left-hander has also recorded a 4.91 ERA (8 ER/14.2 IP) in 11 minor league games (three starts) for Greenville (two starts), Double-A Portland (three games, one start), and Worcester (six games). Selected by Boston in the sixth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the California native owns a 4.35 ERA (33 ER/68.1 IP) in 34 career Major League games, all with the Red Sox (2023, 2025).

Burdi, 32, has tossed 5.1 scoreless innings over four relief appearances for Boston. The right-hander has also pitched in 20 games for Worcester, going 4-0 with four saves and a 1.88 ERA (5 ER/24.0 IP). Originally selected by the Minnesota Twins in the second round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, the Illinois native owns a 5.34 ERA (18 ER/30.1 IP) in 35 career Major League games with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2018-20), Chicago Cubs (2023), New York Yankees (2024), and Red Sox (2025).
