BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today added right-handed pitcher Dustin May to the active Major League roster. He will wear number 85. To make room, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Cooper Criswell to Triple-A Worcester.
May, 27, was acquired on Thursday from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for two minor leaguers. The right-hander has pitched in 19 games (18 starts) for the Dodgers this season, posting a 4.85 ERA (56 ER/104.0 IP) with 97 strikeouts. He has thrown at least 5.0 innings in 16 of his 18 starts this season, including a career-high eight quality starts. Selected by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native has gone 18-16 with a 3.71 ERA (122 ER/295.2 IP) in 65 career Major League games (52 starts), all with Los Angeles (2019-23, 2025).
Criswell, 29, started last night against the Houston Astros and allowed one run over 7.0 innings. The right-hander has pitched in seven games (one start) this season for Boston, going 1-0 with one save and a 3.57 ERA (7 ER/17.2 IP) while also posting a 3.32 ERA (22 ER/59.2 IP) in 14 games (13 starts) for Worcester. Originally selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 13th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the Georgia native owns a 4.48 ERA (77 ER/154.2 IP) in 45 career Major League games (21 starts) with the Angels (2021), Tampa Bay Rays (2022-23), and Red Sox (2024-25).
