Club Options Left-Handed Pitcher Brennan Bernardino to Triple-A Worcester

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today added left-handed pitcher Steven Matz to the active Major League roster. He will wear number 41. To make room, the club optioned left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino to Triple-A Worcester.

Matz, 34, was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for minor league infielder Blaze Jordan. The left-hander has gone 5-2 with one save and a 3.44 ERA (21 ER/55.0 IP) in 32 games (two starts) for the Cardinals this season. Originally selected by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, the New York native owns a 4.24 ERA (463 ER/982.2 IP) with 928 strikeouts in 225 career Major League games (172 starts) with the Mets (2015-20), Toronto Blue Jays (2021), and Cardinals (2023-25). He owns a 4.31 ERA (430 ER/897.1 IP) in 172 career starts and a 3.48 ERA (33 ER/85.1 IP) in 53 relief appearances.

Bernardino, 33, has pitched in 47 games (one start) for Boston this season, posting a 3.09 ERA (15 ER/43.2 IP) with 36 strikeouts. Originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 26th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, the California native owns a 3.47 ERA (57 ER/147.2 IP) in 161 career Major League games (10 starts) with the Seattle Mariners (2022) and Red Sox (2023-25).
