RED SOX ACQUIRE LEFT-HANDED PITCHER STEVEN MATZ FROM ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox have acquired left-handed pitcher Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals, in exchange for minor league infielder Blaze Jordan.

To make room for Matz on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox transferred right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins to the 60-day Injured List.

Matz, 34, has gone 5-2 with one save and a 3.44 ERA (21 ER/55.0 IP) in 32 games (two starts) for the Cardinals this season, holding left-handed hitters to a .179 batting average (15-for-84) and .442 OPS. The left-hander ranks in MLB’s 98th percentile this season in walk rate (4.0%) and 87th percentile in barrel rate (5.3%). Originally selected by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, the New York native owns a 4.24 ERA (463 ER/982.2 IP) with 928 strikeouts in 225 career Major League games (172 starts) with the Mets (2015-20), Toronto Blue Jays (2021), and Cardinals (2023-25). He owns a 4.31 ERA (430 ER/897.1 IP) in 172 career starts and a 3.48 ERA (33 ER/85.1 IP) in 53 relief appearances.

Jordan, 22, has played in 88 games this season between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, including 44 games for Worcester where he is batting .298 (51-for-171) with six home runs and 25 RBI while making 27 starts at third base, 13 at first base, and four as the designated hitter. The right-handed hitter was selected by Boston in the third round of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft.

Dobbins, 25, was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on July 12 with a right ACL tear. The right-hander has pitched in 13 games (11 starts) for Boston this season, his Major League debut, going 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA (28 ER/61.0 IP). Selected by the Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native has also recorded a 5.09 ERA (10 ER/17.2 IP) in four games (two starts) this season for Worcester (three games) and Portland (one game).
