Astros trade for utility infielder Urías from O's

July 31st, 2025

HOUSTON -- With All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes facing a lengthy recovery from a hamstring strain suffered July 20, the Astros acquired third baseman Ramón Urías from the Orioles on Thursday. The Astros sent Minor League pitcher Twine Palmer to Baltimore.

Urías, a 5-foot-9 right-handed-hitting infielder, has played 68 games at third base this year for the Orioles, slashing .248/.300/.388 with eight homers and 34 RBIs in 77 games. He made his Major League debut with Baltimore in 2020 and has played in 506 games in six seasons. He won the American League Gold Glove at third base in 2022.

TRADE DETAILS
Astros receive: 3B Ramón Urías
Orioles receive: RHP Twine Palmer (Single-A Fayetteville)

Paredes, who was added to the American League All-Star team to replace Cleveland’s José Ramírez but skipped the game to deal with “family matters,” was slashing .259/.359/.470 with a team-high 19 homers and 50 RBIs in 93 games before he was injured. He was one of three players the Astros acquired in December’s trade with the Cubs for Kyle Tucker.

According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Astros are still hoping to land Padres right-hander Dylan Cease, who is their top pitching target, prior to Thursday’s 5 p.m. CT Deadline. He’s a free agent at the end of this season.

Cease, a top-five Cy Young Award finisher in the AL with the White Sox in ‘22 and last year in the National League with the Padres, is 3-10 with a 4.79 ERA in 22 starts this year and is en route to his fifth consecutive season of making at least 30 starts. Houston could plug him into their rotation behind aces Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez.

The Astros currently have eight starting pitchers on the injured list, though four of them are well into their Minor League rehabs at Triple-A Sugar Land. That includes right-hander Cristian Javier, who gave up three runs, two hits and four walks and struck out three batters in 3 1/3 innings Wednesday night against Tacoma. He threw 63 pitches and touched 95.3 mph with this fastball.

Right-hander Spencer Arrighetti, who fractured a thumb in early April, will make a rehab start Thursday at Sugar Land and could rejoin Houston’s rotation for next week’s series against the Marlins in Miami. Right-handers Luis Garcia, who’s been out more than two years following Tommy John surgery, and J.P. France are also on rehab at Triple-A.
