Shortstop Orlando Arcia and the Rockies are closing in on a deal, sources told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand and Thomas Harding on Monday night. The team has not confirmed the news.
Arcia -- the Braves’ Opening Day starter at shortstop -- was released by Atlanta on May 25. He had been DFA’d two days earlier, on May 23, to create room for Ronald Acuña Jr. on the active roster.
An All-Star in 2023, Arcia was hitting just .194 with a .445 OPS in 14 games this season. He served as the Braves primary shortstop in each of the past two years, but he was unseated by Nick Allen earlier this season. Arcia's last start came over a month ago, on April 22.
Arcia owns a career .241/.294/.373 slash line across stints with the Brewers and the Braves in his 10-year MLB career.
He joins a Colorado team in desperate need of offense. The Rockies have a teamwide OPS of .644, the third-worst mark in the Majors, ahead of only the Pirates and the White Sox.
Arcia also figures to bring an element of versatility to the Rockies’ roster. As recently as 2022, he spent time at third base, second base and in the outfield, in addition to his work at shortstop.
