Reds acquire INF/OF Andujar from Athletics

July 31st, 2025

CINCINNATI -- The Reds did not land a big-name slugger before the Trade Deadline but did add some offense Thursday, just before the Deadline passed.

Cincinnati acquired utility player from the Athletics for Single-A right-handed pitcher Kenya Huggins (the Reds' No. 22 prospect).

TRADE DETAILS
Reds get: UTL Miguel Andujar
Athletics get: RHP Kenya Huggins (Reds No. 22 prospect)

Andujar, 30, has a .298/.329/.436 slash line in 60 games this season, with six home runs, 10 doubles and 27 RBIs. Across nine Major League seasons for the Yankees, Pirates and A's, he is a career .277 hitter with a .743 OPS.

A right-handed hitter, Andujar has been particularly successful vs. left-handed pitchers. This season against lefties, he is batting .422 with a 1.036 OPS.

“Andujar is one of the best players in baseball at hitting left-handed pitching," Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall said. “He fits as a middle-of-the-order bat against lefties. He’s got some power."

Playing on a one-year, $3 million contract in 2025, Andujar is a rental for the Reds and will be a free agent after the season.

It's unclear where Andujar might play for Cincinnati, but he often plays left field and has a strong arm. He also has played a lot at third base and has spent time at first base, and could potentially serve as a designated hitter.

“It’s going to probably be a little bit of everywhere," Krall said.

Andujar also has battled injuries, including a right oblique strain that cost him 33 games from June 2-July 8.

Andujar's best year came in 2018 with the Yankees. He finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year race to Shohei Ohtani after hitting .297 with an .855 OPS, 27 homers, 47 doubles and 92 RBIs.

Andujar is the third player the Reds acquired ahead of the Deadline, joining right-hander Zack Littell and third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes.
