MIAMI – The Miami Marlins tonight selected shortstop Aiva Arquette with the seventh overall selection, and outfielders Cam Cannarella (43rd overall), Brandon Compton (46th overall), and Max Williams (78th overall) on the first day of the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.
Arquette, 21, is ranked as the consensus top college position player in the 2025 class, the fifth-best overall prospect by Baseball America, and the sixth-best overall prospect by MLB Pipeline. The 6-foot-5 right-handed hitter led the Beavers in 2025 with his team-best .354 average (90x254) while setting career highs with 73 runs, 17 doubles, 19 home runs, and 66 RBI in 65 games. This season, he posted a 1.115 OPS, 153 wRC+, 16.5% strikeout rate and 12.6% walk rate. The junior led the program to the eighth Men’s College World Series in program history, hitting .360 (18x50) with three doubles, two home runs, and six RBI in 11 tournament games. In his first season at Oregon State, and his first season as a primary shortstop, he made all 65 starts at the position and posted a .974 fielding percentage.
Cannarella, 21, is ranked as the 27th-best prospect by Baseball America and the 36th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline. The left-handed hitter posted a career .360/.453/.551 slash line (262x728) in three seasons with the Clemson Tigers from 2023-25, including a .353 batting average (82x232) and 1.010 OPS during his junior season in 2025. The outfielder from Hartsville, S.C. ranked second in the ACC in doubles (22) and fifth in on-base percentage (.479) this season, leading his team in both of those categories and earning Second-Team All-ACC honors. He was also named to the All-ACC Tournament team after going 15x30 (.500) with three doubles, three homers, 11 RBI, and a .900 slugging percentage in seven postseason games. In 169 games played at Clemson during his collegiate career, Cannarella made 168 starts in center field.
Compton, 21, is ranked as the 41st-best overall prospect by Baseball America and the 47th-best overall prospect by MLB Pipeline. Across two seasons with the Sun Devils in 2024-25, the 6-foot-1 left-handed batter slashed .310/.401/.568 (125x403) with 35 doubles, 23 home runs, and 105 RBI in 111 games. The Glendale, Ariz. native began his collegiate career with a .354 average (67x189) and 1.089 OPS in 2024, earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors after leading the group in homers (12), average, slugging percentage (.661), OBP (.427), and RBI (51). The outfielder attended MLB’s Draft Combine in June, hitting 12 balls over 112 mph and recorded the top three, and five of the top seven, exit velocities ever recorded at the Combine since its inception in 2021.
Williams, 20, is ranked as the 81st-best prospect by MLB Pipeline and the 92nd-best prospect by Baseball America. The Detroit, Mich. native has hit .314 (152x484) with a .970 OPS across three seasons of collegiate ball at the University of Alabama (2023) and Florida State University (2024-25). In 57 games in 2025, the left-handed hitter slashed .316/.383/.598 (74x234) while ranking second in the ACC with 19 home runs. The 6-foot-2 outfielder posted a .991 fielding percentage playing exclusively in center field and was named to the All-ACC Second-Team after completing his junior season. Williams attended Clay High School in Green Cove Springs, Fla., located about five hours north of Miami.
