Mariners Acquire Infielder Josh Naylor From Arizona

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today the Mariners have acquired infielder Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia and minor league right-handed pitcher Ashton Izzi.

“We are thrilled to add Josh as we make a push for the Postseason,” said Hollander. “Josh’s ability to hit for both average and power is unique and we are excited not to have to face him anymore.”

Naylor, 28, is batting .292 (102x349) with 49 runs, 19 doubles, 1 triple, 11 home runs, 59 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 37 walks in 93 games with Arizona this season, getting on base at a .360 clip, slugging .447 with an .807 OPS. The left-handed hitting and fielding first baseman has a 124 OPS+ in 394 plate appearances.

The 28-year-old is one of 12 left-handed hitters across the Majors with an OPS of .800 or better since 2023 (min. 1500 plate appearances), along with Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, Freddie Freeman, Bryce Harper, Matt Olson, Rafael Devers, Kyle Schwarber, Gunnar Henderson, Corbin Carroll, Cody Bellinger and Jarren Duran.

Naylor made the American League All-Star team last season, registering career-highs with 31 home runs and 108 RBI for the Cleveland Guardians in 2024. He was traded by Cleveland to Arizona in exchange for right-handed pitcher Slade Cecconi on Dec. 21, 2024.

Naylor has appeared in 7 Major League seasons with the San Diego Padres (2019-20), Cleveland Guardians (2020-24) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2025), totaling 302 runs scored, 639 hits, 136 doubles, 2 triples, 95 home runs, 402 RBI, 36 stolen bases and 210 walks, getting on base at a .329 clip, slugging .444 with a .773 OPS and 114 OPS+.

He was originally selected by the Miami Marlins in the 1st round (12th overall) of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Naylor was traded by the Marlins, along with right-handers Luis Castillo, Carter Capps and Jarred Cosart, to the Padres in exchange for right-handers Andrew Cashner, Tayron Guerrero and Colin Rea, and cash considerations, on July 29, 2016. Naylor made his Major League debut with San Diego on May 24, 2019. He was traded to Cleveland on Aug. 31, 2020. In 5 seasons with the Guardians, he hit .264 (464x1758) with 220 runs, 102 doubles, 75 homers, 307 RBI, 23 stolen bases and 147 walks with a .774 OPS.

Garcia, 25, made 2 appearances with Seattle this season, including his Major League debut on July 21, allowing 2 runs (1 ER) over 2.0 innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 walks with 1 strikeout. In 32 relief appearances between Double-A Arkansas (24 G) and Triple-A Tacoma (8 G) this season, the left-hander is 5-4 with 5 saves and a 3.51 ERA (13 ER, 33.1 IP) with 42 strikeouts and 17 walks.

Garcia was ranked as the top left-handed pitching prospect in the organization via MLB Pipeline, and the #4 pitching prospect in the system. Garcia was the #13 overall prospect in the organization.

In 68 career minor league appearances (25 starts), Garcia is 11-7 with 7 saves and a 2.49 ERA (44 ER, 159.1 IP) with 184 strikeouts and 67 walks, posting 10.4 strikeouts-per-9 innings. He was selected by Seattle in the 11th round of the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Texas A&M University. He also attended Quinnipiac University (CT), where he pitched 3 seasons from 2020-22.

Izzi, 21, has made 12 appearances (12 starts) for the High-A Everett AquaSox this season and is 2-4 with a 5.51 ERA (29 ER, 47.1 IP) with 21 walks and 56 strikeouts, posting 10.3 strikeouts-per-9 innings. Izzi was placed on the 10-day Injured List with an oblique injury on April 4.

The 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher was ranked as the Mariners #16 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline and the #13 overall prospect by Baseball America. He was the 7th overall pitching prospect in the organization via MLB Pipeline and 4th overall pitching prospect by Baseball America.

In 47 career appearances (47 starts) in the minor leagues, Izzi is 8-11 with a 4.13 ERA (81 ER, 176.1 IP) with 88 walks, 162 strikeouts and 1.51 WHIP. He was selected by the Mariners in the 4th round (126th overall) of the 2022 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Oswego East High School (IL).
