Rivera suffers torn Achilles during Yanks Old-Timers' Day game

August 9th, 2025

The Yankees suffered another bullpen injury on Saturday, but this one was a little different.

Hall of Fame closer tore his Achilles tendon during Saturday’s Old-Timers’ Day game at Yankee Stadium and will undergo surgery, according to a report from The Athletic (subscription required).

The legendary reliever crumpled to the ground while manning center field during the contest of Yankees alumni, according to The Athletic. It came just after Rivera -- hitless in three Major League at-bats -- ripped a single off Andy Pettitte.

Rivera, 55, holds the all-time MLB record for saves with 652 during his 19-year career, all with the Yankees. He played his final season in 2013 and became the first unanimous inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Saturday marked the first time since 2019 that the Yankees played an Old-Timers’ Day game. The event commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Bronx Bombers’ 2000 World Series title.
