A matchup of two No. 1 overall picks … from the same year

June 13th, 2025

Thursday's game between the Bandits and Volts of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League featured a heavyweight pitching matchup of two pitchers selected first overall in their respective draft this year.

The Bandits' Lexi Kilfoyl -- a former Oklahoma State All-American -- was selected No. 1 overall in January's first-ever AUSL allocation Draft. The Volts' Sam Landry, meanwhile, was selected first in the inaugural AUSL College Draft in May after a standout career with Oklahoma.

The game didn't turn into the potential pitcher's duel that was expected, though, as the Bandits beat the Volts in a wild 6-5 win that ended with an extra-innings, walk-off RBI single from Delanie Wisz in the ninth inning. Kilfoyl was tagged for four runs in four innings and allowed a pair of home runs to McKenzie Clark and Tiare Jennings. Landry, meanwhile, allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings, while also allowing two home runs to Jordan Roberts and Wisz.

Kilfoyl had allowed just one run in her first two outings across five innings on June 6 and 9. Landry, too, dazzled in her first outing on June 8, allowing one run in 4 1/3 innings.

Played at McMurry Park in Sulphur, Louisiana, a pair of local sports celebrities also made an appearance. Jennie Finch, one of the best softball players ever and a resident of Sulphur, was in attendance, as was LSU Women's Basketball coach Kim Mulkey. Both were on the field with AUSL commissioner Kim Ng before the game.

Mulkey's time to shine didn't stop there, as the LSU coach also hopped on the ESPN 2 broadcast early in the game when runs were being scored left and right. Mulkey being interviewed on the broadcast while Wisz went yard against Landry.
