PHILADELPHIA -- 's final chance to keep the streak alive came in the eighth inning in Game 1 of Wednesday’s split doubleheader against the Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park.

Schwarber entered the day riding a 47-game on-base streak that started on Sept. 23, 2024. It was the Phillies’ fourth-longest streak since at least 1900. It was MLB’s longest streak since Tommy Pham’s 48-game streak in 2018-19.

But Schwarber grounded out to Cardinals pitcher Steven Matz.

It was over.

Schwarber went 0-for-4 in Game 1.

“It’s a big story, nationally,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “And he’s deserved it because he’s put together great at-bats all year.”

Mike Schmidt’s 56-game streak (1981-82) remains the Phillies’ record since at least 1900. He is followed by Chuck Klein (49 games in 1930), Bobby Abreu (48 from 2000-01) and Schwarber. The all-time record is an incredible 84 games, done by Hall of Famer Ted Williams in 1949.

Schwarber homered in the third inning of Philadelphia's 14-7 Game 2 loss. He hasn’t gone two consecutive games without reaching base since July 22-23.

Maybe it was the beginning of another streak.
