With 2-HR game, Marte among legends on Arizona's all-time RBI list

Carroll also delivers a two-homer game in the D-backs' rout of Atlanta

June 4th, 2025

ATLANTA -- and did the heavy lifting for the Diamondbacks’ offense on Tuesday.

Both Marte and Carroll had two-homer games that lifted the D-backs to an 8-3 win over the Braves at Truist Park.

Marte hit home runs in his first two at-bats against Atlanta starting pitcher Spencer Strider. Carroll hit a solo home run off Strider in the top of the fifth before blowing the game open in the top of the ninth with a three-run home run off Braves reliever Rafael Montero.

Carroll went 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Marte went 3-for-3 with two walks and three RBIs.

“Those are your two catalysts and your main players in the whole lineup,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “They go out there and they get us an early lead. I thought the tack-on home run by Corbin [in the 9th] after we gave up a couple runs to make it 5-3 was a good momentum changer for us.”

“The whole team was super engaged today and played very well today, but those two were certainly a highlight. It’s fun to watch Ketel get into that mode. He gets hot, he carries teams, and when he’s rested, this is what he’s like.”

It was the first time two Diamondbacks have hit two home runs in a game since Aug. 2, 2024, in Pittsburgh when Josh Bell and Marte each homered twice in a 9-8 win.

Tuesday's homers backed starting pitcher Zac Gallen, who had one of his best outings of the season, allowing three runs (one earned) over seven innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Gallen has made it through at least five innings in 11 of his 13 starts this season.

The D-backs have won two in a row after dropping 9 of 10 games from May 20 to May 31.

“Putting up a crooked number is great,” Carroll said. “We were able to jump on the starter, extend the lead late and keep our closer out of the game and keep him fresh. That’s really helpful, and that sets us up well for the rest of the series.”

Marte hit Strider’s middle-middle changeup a Statcast-projected 445 feet to give Arizona a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. In the top of the third, Marte hit Strider’s middle-middle fastball into the right-field seats for a two-run homer to give Arizona a 4-0 lead. Marte’s second home run, which was hit a Statcast-projected 371 feet, had a 113.2 mph exit velocity and a 19 degree launch angle.

Marte is now third all-time in career RBIs as a D-back with 481. He surpassed Steve Finley’s 479 with his two-run homer in the third inning. Only Luis Gonzalez (774) and Paul Goldschmidt (710) are ahead of Marte on Arizona's all-time list.

The D-backs tagged Strider for a season-high five earned runs on six hits over five innings.

Carroll’s first home run was off a middle-middle Strider fastball and it traveled a Statcast-projected 438 feet.

“[Strider’s] a good pitcher,” Carroll said. “He trusts his fastball. Even when it’s right down the middle, it’s still hard to hit. He’s got an outlier fastball, and I was fortunate to put a good swing on it.”
