BALTIMORE -- Much of the news regarding the Orioles’ long list of injured players over the past week has been positive -- but not all of it.
Over the weekend, Jordan Westburg sustained a setback in his recovery from a left hamstring strain, manager Brandon Hyde announced Wednesday. The 26-year-old infielder has again been shut down and stopped his running progression, making his timetable to return uncertain.
Westburg, who was placed on the 10-day injured list on April 28, was originally scheduled to begin a Minor League rehab assignment late last week. But his hamstring remained an issue, and Hyde said he would get some extra time before ideally playing rehab games later this week.
Now, Westburg’s recovery process has been put on hold.
“Westy had a little setback, unfortunately,” Hyde said. “We’re letting the hamstring calm down again. He hasn’t started back up yet, his running. That was unfortunate news.”
A first-time All-Star in 2024, Westburg has been a key member of Baltimore’s young position-player core since arriving in the big leagues in ‘23. Last year, he hit .264 with 26 doubles, five triples, 18 home runs, 63 RBIs and a .793 OPS, though he was limited to 107 games because of a right hand fracture that sidelined him from Aug. 1-Sept. 21.
In 2025, Westburg is hitting .217 with two doubles, one triple, four homers, six RBIs and a .656 OPS in 23 games.
Wednesday also brought a positive update from the Orioles, who reinstated infielder Ramón Urías from the 10-day IL. The 30-year-old, who had been out since May 3 due to a right hamstring strain, didn’t need a rehab assignment after missing only a short period of time.
Prior to the injury, Urías had been among Baltimore’s best hitters. The six-year MLB veteran was batting .292 with two doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs and a .757 OPS in 22 games before going on the IL.
Urías joined outfielder Tyler O'Neill (activated last Friday) and starter Zach Eflin (Sunday) as injured O’s players who have returned in the past week. Their IL is down to nine players.
“It’s great for us. It’s just what we need, the full team together,” Urías said. “We’re just ready to win some games.”
The Orioles (15-24 entering Wednesday) will look to Urías to step up with Westburg still out. Emmanuel Rivera, who is a right-handed-hitting infielder as well, has also provided a boost of late, going 9-for-26 (.346) with two doubles and three RBIs over his first eight games since being called up from Triple-A Norfolk.
