Greene takes no-hit bid into 7th, shuts out playoff-bound Cubs on one hit

CINCINNATI -- Hunter Greene took a no-hitter two outs into the seventh before settling for a one-hit, complete-game shutout in a 1-0 Reds win over the Cubs on Thursday night at Great American Ball Park.

Greene needed just 69 pitches to hold the Cubs hitless through six innings before Seiya Suzuki grounded a clean two-out double down the left-field line, a hit that just scooted under the glove of rookie third baseman Sal Stewart.

While the Cubs played their first game since clinching a playoff spot on Wednesday in Pittsburgh, the Reds are desperately trying to stay alive in the race for the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League.

The Reds (77-76) remain two games behind the New York Mets (79-74), who beat San Diego, 6-1, earlier Thursday afternoon.

Greene responded to his shortest outing of the season dominantly, striking out nine and walking one for his first nine-inning career complete game.
