The Angels have called Angel Stadium their home since 1966, after playing their first year at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles in 1961 before playing four seasons at Dodger Stadium, calling it Chavez Ravine Stadium for home games. It was former owner Gene Autry who decided to make the move south to Anaheim, 11 years after Disneyland put the city on the map. Angel Stadium, affectionately called the Big A, is the fourth-oldest ballpark in the Majors behind only Fenway Park (1912), Wrigley Field (1994) and Dodger Stadium (1962).
The ballpark, however, underwent extensive renovations beginning in 1997 under Disney ownership that transformed the stadium. It previously was more of a multipurpose stadium, as it also hosted the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams from 1980-94.
Angel Stadium is located in the heart of Orange County and sits near the 57, 5 and 22 freeways. It is roughly bounded by Katella Avenue to the north, the 57 Freeway to the east, Orangewood Avenue to the south, and State College Boulevard to the west. The site has ample parking and allows tailgating. Entrances are located off Douglass Rd., State College Blvd., and Orangewood Ave.
It’s also located only a mile away from the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) station that allows fans to take public transportation such as Metrolink to the game.
The ballpark has hosted three All-Star Games (1967, 1989 and 2010), as well as the 2002 World Series, the only title in franchise history. It has also hosted its fair share of other major events, including concerts featuring artists such as the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, U2, Bob Dylan and The Who.
Features
The most famous feature outside the ballpark is the historic Big A sign that measures 230 feet tall and was originally installed in 1966. It was initially located behind the left-field fence but was moved to the parking lot closer to the 57 Freeway in 1979. It lights up after every Angels win, whether they are home or away.
The main entrance is located behind home plate and features two oversized red Angels caps. But there are six gates to enter the park with gates opening 90 minutes before night games and 60 minutes before day games. Gates 1 (near Sect. 107) and 2 (near Sect. 114) are on the third-base side, Gates 3 (Sect. 122) and 4 (Sect. 129) are on the first-base side and Gate 6 (Sect. 236) is in right field.
The most striking feature inside the ballpark is the famed rock fountain in left-center field. The Disney-esque structure was added as part of the 1997-98 renovations and was named the "California Spectacular. It has an "A" as part of the artificial rock formation with geysers erupting to create a waterfall effect. It's become one of the Angels' gameday traditions, as fireworks are shot out of that area at the start of every game, after every Halos home run and after Angels wins.
