DODGERS SELECT BEN RORTVEDT
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers have selected the contract of catcher Ben Rortvedt and optioned infielder Alex Freeland. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated right-handed pitcher Alexis Díaz for assignment.
Rortvedt, 27, was acquired on July 31 from the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-team exchange with Tampa and Cincinnati. He played in 17 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .228 with two homers and six RBI. Earlier this year, he batted .095 with two runs and six RBI with Tampa Bay. He has been in the Majors parts of four seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2021), New York Yankees (2023) and Tampa Bay (2024-25) hitting .186 with eight home runs and 48 RBI. He was originally drafted by the Twins in the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Vernon Area High School in Wisconsin.
Freeland, 24, played 29 games for the Dodgers, batting .190 with two homers and six RBI. Prior to joining the big club, he appeared in 94 games for the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets, slashing .253/.377/.421 with 12 homers and 71 RBI. He has been with the Dodgers since being selected in the third round of the 2022 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Central Florida. In 344 minor league games, he has batted .253 with 42 homers and 208 RBI while playing three defensive positions.
