Rushing (right leg) to 10-day IL; Glasnow (back) expects quick return

BALTIMORE -- The Dodgers added rookie catcher and first baseman to the 10-day injured list Saturday with a lower right leg contusion, but righty starter (back tightness) will avoid a similar fate.

Catcher 's contract was selected from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and he joined the Dodgers in Baltimore on Saturday.

Rushing departed in the sixth inning of Friday’s 2-1 loss vs. the Orioles after he fouled the ball off the inside of his leg just below his right knee and immediately crumpled to the ground after his swing. He hobbled off on one leg with his arms over the shoulders of manager Dave Roberts and a team medical staff member.

The backstop was then seen using crutches after the game, and on Saturday wore a compression sleeve on his right leg in the clubhouse. An X-ray on Friday and CT scan on Saturday were both negative.

“I didn’t really know what to expect, I’d never fouled a ball off my leg that high,” Rushing said on Saturday. “But yeah it was scary. I thought I could’ve broke a bone.”

The Dodgers were already carrying three catchers. But among them, three-time All-Star Will Smith is day to day with a right hand contusion after taking a foul ball off his hand Wednesday against the Pirates. Roberts said he believes the veteran’s return would come Sunday off the bench, at the earliest.

“Dalton tried to give it a go today, move around," Roberts said. "But ... this is going to be a three-, four-, five-day situation. So to get him on the IL to cover our bases just makes sense.”

Rushing has a slash line of .190/.254/.298 in 45 games. He has caught in 35 of those, including 33 starts.

Robinson, 30, has played 51 career big league games, most recently with the White Sox last season. He has slashed .264/.333/.372 in 74 Triple-A (two teams) this season.

Glasnow returned to Los Angeles and saw doctors there Saturday after he was scratched from Friday’s start with back tightness.

“Nothing came of it, so I think we dodged a bullet there,” Roberts said. “He was playing catch today, so we expect to pencil him in soon.”

Glasnow tied a season high with seven innings pitched in his last start Saturday against the D-backs. Roberts said Glasnow was still in line to pitch until back tightness that began on Thursday night continued into Friday.

Glasnow has won just one of his 14 starts this year, but he has pitched well since returning from a bout of right shoulder inflammation on July 9, posting a 3.02 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings spanning nine starts.
