PHOENIX -- Lourdes Gurriel Jr. lined a double off the left-field wall to score Geraldo Perdomo from second base as the Diamondbacks walked off the Rockies, 6-5, in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday night at Chase Field.
Here are some things to know about the game:
The Diamondbacks played a very clean game
Sloppy play has been an issue off and on for the Diamondbacks this season with manager Torey Lovullo saying a few times earlier this year that his team “played confused” at times.
Saturday was one of those games that Lovullo relishes -- the Diamondbacks hit cutoff men, they ran the bases aggressively but also smartly and the infield defense was especially good, with second baseman Ketel Marte and shortstop Geraldo Perdomo turning a pair of double plays.
“We turned every double play,” Lovullo said. “When the ball is on the ground, my expectation is we turn double plays. That's what I want. So there were some crucial moments there in the game – Ketel had real nice pure turns, Perdomo chopped it up real nice, made a nice feed to Ketel on a couple of occasions. When it looks right, it's a beautiful thing. It gets you two big outs.”
Corbin matches career high in homers
Outfielder Corbin Carroll led off the fifth with a homer that tied the game at 4. It was his 25th of the season, tying his career high which he set in his 2023 Rookie of the Year campaign.
Carroll just missed hitting another one in the sixth when his ball was caught at the wall. Per Statcast, the hit would have been a home run in 16 of the 30 Major League ballparks.
“It's a major accomplishment for him,” Lovullo said. “And what he does on the baseball field never surprises me. He's always on a search to get better and do special things for us, and he's continuing his climb every single day to be the best version of himself. So I think he's sitting at 25 but he's gonna come in here tomorrow like he's got zero. That's his mindset. That's what makes him so special.”
Burgos makes his Arizona debut
With their postseason hopes almost certainly gone, the final weeks of the 2025 season are about getting a look at some of their young players, particularly on the pitching side of things.
Juan Burgos, who was acquired from the Mariners as part of the Eugenio Suárez trade last month, made his Diamondbacks debut after being recalled from Triple-A Reno earlier in the day.
Burgos worked two-thirds of an inning allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two.
“I think there might have been a little case of anxiousness,” Lovullo said. “All to be expected. I like the two-seam fastball, I like the presence on the mound, the confidence.”
Another good outing for Hoffmann
The Diamondbacks acquired right-hander Andrew Hoffmann from the Royals in exchange for Randal Grichuk a few days before the Trade Deadline and he made his third appearance for the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Hoffman tossed a scoreless top of the ninth and did not allow a hit while striking out one and he now has thrown 2 2/3 scoreless innings for Arizona.
“Love it,” Lovullo said. “We've identified the guys via the trade, they're here now, we know there’s more in the system, but the ones that are here, so far, so good. It's looking really nice.”
