DETROIT – Rangers All-Star shortstop Corey Seager sat out two games prior to Saturday night with right hamstring soreness. The rest seemed to work as he hit two homers and one double with three RBIs in his return game against the Tigers, a 10-3 Texas win.
However, he was out of the lineup again Sunday for Texas' 6-1 win in the series finale and Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Seager was likely playing at about 85 percent on Saturday.
“He will continue to get treatment today,” Bochy said prior to Sunday’s game, “and he’ll continue to get treated for it today, and we’ll see where we’re at when we get home. … It flared up a little bit. He’s not playing because we don’t want to put him at risk as far as DHing."
The Rangers open a three-game home series with the Rockies on Monday night. Bochy added that Seager might get “further evaluations,” while the team is “being cautious” with its slugging shortstop and considering placing him on the injured list.
Bochy agreed that it wasn’t the news Texas needed after the high of Saturday’s lopsided win, when he noted how Seager “changes our lineup … makes everybody better and is one of the best hitters in the game.”
Bochy said Sunday, “We’ve got to get this thing taken care of. Sure, the IL’s a possibility.”
Josh Smith played shortstop Friday night and Ezequiel Duran replaced Seager on Sunday. Bochy opted against using Seager as the designated hitter because the manager said swinging is what most affects his hamstring.
