NEW YORK -- Before taking his turn at bat in the fifth inning of the Yankees' 12-5 win over the Athletics on Sunday, Cody Bellinger had a little good fortune on his side -- all thanks to a fist bump.
While standing in the on-deck circle, Bellinger heard someone call out to him from the seats near the Yankees’ dugout, behind home plate. He looked over and saw a mother sitting with her son.
“I was warming up, and the mom says, ‘Hey Cody, big fan, last time you gave him a fist bump you hit a homer,’” Bellinger told MLB.com postgame. “And I turn around, and I look, and I just saw these two people there. I was like, ‘Oh, that was really cool.’ So I turn around and I give another fist bump.”
Bellinger then stepped to the plate to face left-hander Hogan Harris. On the first pitch, he launched a three-run homer into the right-field seats.
Bellinger said he got chills as he rounded the bases.
“Obviously, I had to go show him some love,” Bellinger said. “Honestly, that was a pretty cool moment. It was just a really, really cool moment.”
