What's better than winning 12 games in a row? Winning burgers for your entire city.
The Brewers just won free hamburgers for all of Milwaukee thanks to their 12-game winning streak, which reached the magic dozen on Wednesday.
That triggered a decades-long promotion by Milwaukee restaurant chain George Webb, which has promised free burgers for the city anytime the Brewers go on a 12-game win streak.
The tradition goes all the way back to the 1940s, when George Webb himself started predicting that the Brewers -- then a Minor League team -- would win 12 games in a row. Eventually, his restaurant started promising free hamburgers anytime Webb's prediction came true.
It's only happened three times: in 1987, 2018 … and now.
Once again, Milwaukeeans will be able to get their burgers. The date and details of the promotion will be announced today.
The hype was real for Brewers fans … and players. The team really wanted to win Milwaukee those burgers.
"I was telling my wife last night that I wanted to win the burgers for everybody in the stands," Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff said after throwing four scoreless innings to start off win No. 12. "You could tell the energy around today on a day game was a little bit more than usual."
In the first 1987 giveaway, when the Brewers won 13 games in a row to start the season, George Webb gave out 168,000 free burgers. In 2018, when Milwaukee won 12 straight games between the regular season and playoffs, the restaurant gave out 90,000 free burgers plus 100,000 burger vouchers.
